Every winter, thousands of Canadians head south to trade bitter frost for coastal warmth. Based on a recent survey conducted with Goose members, our latest Canadian Snowbird Report reveals that while the desire for warm weather remains strong, today's travellers are navigating a complex mix of shifting financial pressures, political climate shifts, and evolving travel logistics.

Insurance Essentials & Destination Trends

Protecting against unexpected disruptions and health emergencies has become standard practice for Canadian snowbirds, with an overwhelming 93.4% securing travel medical coverage before stepping foot on a plane or highway. This caution is well-justified given the realities of cross-border travel:

  • Travel Delays: A notable 64.1% of respondents report having experienced travel delays during their trips.

  • Unexpected Health Expenses: 25.3% of snowbirds face unplanned healthcare costs while abroad, where out-of-pocket medical bills can escalate rapidly.

When it comes to where snowbirds are migrating, the United States—particularly traditional strongholds like Florida and Arizona—remains the leading destination at 28.5%. However, alternative warm-weather spots continue to capture significant market share:

  • Mexico: 20.1%

  • The Caribbean: 18.9%

  • Australia: 3.7%

  • South America: 3.3%

Trip lengths are also shifting away from multi-month stays toward shorter, more flexible getaways. A solid 60.9% of snowbirds now restrict their winter escapes to less than a month. Meanwhile, roughly 30% stretch their stay between one and four months, leaving only a tiny fraction remaining abroad for five months or longer.

Primary Travel Concerns

Economic and global factors weigh heavily on travellers' minds this season, driving changes in how long they stay and how much they spend.

  • Financial Pressures: High insurance premiums lead all financial anxieties at 52.8%, followed closely by Canadian dollar fluctuations and weakened purchasing power at 40.7%. The general cost of accommodation and airfare also impacts 27.5% of travellers.

  • Political Climate & Friction: A striking 62% of survey respondents note that the overall political climate influences their travel decisions. Specific concerns include cross-border trade tensions (26.7%) and navigating changing border procedures.

Evaluating Travel Insurance Policies

Given that health coverage is a non-negotiable expense for most snowbirds, buyers are looking far beyond just the cheapest policy on the market. When evaluating travel insurance, decision-makers focus heavily on three core areas:

  • Cost & Overall Value: 83.2%

  • Coverage Limits & Policy Options: 49.8%

  • Pre-Existing Condition Clauses: 46.2%

Key Takeaways for Winter Travellers

Navigating a successful winter getaway comes down to proactive planning. Lock in flight and accommodation details early, ensure your medical coverage directly accommodates any pre-existing health conditions, and stay informed on changing customs and border guidelines to minimize friction at entry checkpoints.
